There have been some great photos uploaded to the website that don't fit into any of the main pages that we have set up yet, and I didn't want to provoke the howls of protest I would undoubtedly have received if I had posted Alan's great photo of the crab spider on the insect page and so here are some of the other creatures that haven't got a page of their own yet. Keep sending us photos to wildaboutlaverstock@gmail.com or uploading them to the Facebook page and maybe one day some of these creatures will get a page all to themselves!
We have a wildlife trap cam at St Andrew's Church and this short video shows you some of the visitors we had over a 48 hour period. It's a great illustration of the diversity of wildlife (and in one case not-so-wildlife in our village .
I must admit I had never heard of these spiders until Alan sent in this photo. They live on flowers, hunting for pollinaters they can ambush and can even change colour. They don't spin webs but do use their silk to protect their eggs. Read more about them here.
Guy took this great picture of deer behind the Duck Inn. I'm pretty sure they are Roe deer but I'm open to correction!
Paul took this picture of a slow worm at Castle Hill Country park (it's not in the village but it is part of our civil parish- so we will let it in!). The Wiltshire Wildlife Trust were recently involved in a project to relocate some slow worms in the country park who were going to be affected by the building of new homes on the site of the old barn. Perhaps this was one of them.
The devestating impact the american grey squirrel has had on our native red squirrels is a great example of how dangerous invasive species can be in our ever-more connected world. However their acrobatic antics and the great PR their tail provides means they are a popular site in the village.
